Singh made the statement at a function to launch the CSIR-NIO research vessel Sindhu Sadhana at Mormugao on Saturday. The Sindhu Sadhana is India's first indigenously built research vessel and boost the NIO's research capabalities.
Singh said that the government of India has sent a team of youngsters in the age group of 18 to 25 to work alongside Nobel laureates abroad. This way, the government intends to identify youth who have an aptitude for science and will carry of India's legacy of research.
According to information by NIO, the Sindhu Sadhana is a multi-disciplinary research vessel which is 80 metres long and 17.6 metres wide. It can house 57 personnel and travel at speeds of 13.5 knots. It has 10 laboratories fitted with the latest equipment for online data collection and data processing from single beam and multi beam echo sounders, Parasound water column and sub-bottom profiler, gravimeter, magnetometer, Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, etc.
With the Sindhu Sadhana, the NIO plans to carry out several observational campaigns to improve the present understanding of the process in the seas around India and provide additional inputs for forecasting the variations in marine environment. The seafloor information resulting from high resolution mapping and sampling will help in identifying suitable areas for offshore developments and mineral prospecting including petroleum hydrocarbons.
