CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday became yet another casualty of a shoegate after a disgruntled youth hurled his footwear at him during an independence day function in a village near Ludhiana.

The shoe missed Badal by a whisker and fell just short of his security cordon on the stage. Badal was addressing a political conference in Issru village in Khanna town of Ludhiana.

The man, Bikram, was later identified as a 23-year-old tailor from Dhanoula village in Barnala. He was immediately detained by Khanna police.

After the incident, Bikram, during his interaction with media persons, claimed that he did not harbour any malice towards Badal but his disenchantment was with the "chair of the chief minister" that was leading to the vicious joblessness and indiscriminate problem of drug addiction in Punjab.

"The problem lies with all chief ministers who make tall promises before elections and on occassions like Independence Day. But they never fulfill them. I am just another voice of those youth in despair and no hope from their governments" he said.

After the incident, Badal, said that he had pardoned the youth.

An official statement, released from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), later, however said that the youth belonged to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

Neither the Khanna police confirmed nor denied this.

"The man is under custody. We are investigating the case" said Khanna SSP Harsh Bansal. The SAD, in its statement, went on to warn the AAP to desist from disturbing law and order situation.

" In case AAP indulges in any such act again it would be difficult to control the SAD cadre which might then not allow the Aam Aadmi Party to hold any political conference in Punjab in future" a statement by SAD spokesperson Mahesh Inder Grewal said.

The AAP leadership in Punjab was not reachable for comments.

The incident came less than a week before Punjab is set for two by-polls, scheduled in Talwandi Sabo and Patiala on August 21.

AAP had recently scripted a record in Punjab after it registered four massive wins in the Lok Sabha polls. The four seats were the only wins in their national tally.
