During his maiden Independence-Day address, Modi suggested that the parents of young ultras who may have turned to terrorism or Left-wing extremism, must take the responsibility for assessing the underlying causes for the same. Also underlining that casteism or communal tension benefited none and only cast a slur on Mother India. Modi asked the people to resolve and put a 10-year moratorium on all such activity in the interest of a peaceful society.
Delivering the extempore speech, Modi recalled his recent public statement in Nepal meant to draw global attention. "There was a time in Nepal when their youngsters had opted for the path of violence but today I witness that the same youngsters are waiting for their Constitution....if Nepal could present the best example of moving from weapons to books, then it could provide inspiration to the youngsters in the world to abandon the path of violence," he said adding that "it's the call of the hour that we...take the path of brotherhood".
Interestingly, Modi seemed to suggest that parents of youth drawn towards Left-wing extremism and terrorism must not only know that their "misguided sons are bent on killing innocent people" but also take responsibility of asking them why they had opted for the wrong path.
"...As parents, we also have some responsibilities...somebody tells me that those who....kill innocent people are Maoists, terrorists, but they are also somebody`s children. I would like to ask of such parents if they had ever asked their children as to why they were taking a wrong path. Every parent must take this responsibility, he must know that his misguided son is bent on killing innocent people," he said.
"I want to say to those youngsters...that whatever they are and wherever they are, it is all because of mother India...whoever you are it is all because of your parents. I want to ask you to think how green, how beautiful and how beneficial this earth can become if you shoulder the plough instead of the gun which spills blood on this land," he said.
Dwelling on communal and casteist violence, Modi, who has himself been questioned over his role in 2002 post-Godhra riots in Gujarat, said the country had had enough of fights and killings. "Look behind and you will find that nobody has benefited from it...Except casting a slur on Mother India, we have done nothing," he said and sought a resolve from the people to put a 10-year moratorium on activities meant to promote casteism, communalism, regionalism or discrimination on social and economic basis. "We shall march ahead to a society which will be free from all such tensions...and you will see that how much strength we get from peace, unity, goodwill and brotherhood," he said.
