The highlight of the two-day sale was the cover lot titled 'Bhoomi' by Raza which went for Rs 5.3 crore. This created a record for the most expensive painting ever to be sold by AstaGuru in an online bid. "In this lot, one sees Raza move towards various expressions and the modulation of abstract and geometric forms. The canvas contains all the essential requisites of line, tone, colour, texture and space," the auctioneer said.
The next highest bid was for an M F Husain painting whose title derives from Emperor Jehangir's description of Jammu & Kashmir as the Valley of Paradise. "Gar Firdaus bar ru-e-zameen ast, hameenasto, hameenasto, hameenast," the king had said as he compared the scenic beauty of the state to the Garden of Paradise.
Husain had painted this artwork for the main entrance arch of the Indian Trade Fair in Caracas in the late 1980s. It was estimated to fetch Rs 1.5-2.5 crore at the auction and went for Rs 1.83 crore.
Anjolie Ela Menon also saw one of her paintings achieve the highest hammer price in any given auction. The signature 'Jharokha' was expected to fetch Rs 60-80 lakh but sold for Rs 89 lakh almost.
Approximately 77% of the lots were sold with four lots selling for more than a crore of rupees.
