The term 'helplessness' used by Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal in advocating the hike in itself is like dashing of all hopes of SAD government from the NDA, Manpreet has said. Manpreet Badal, who is estranged nephew of chief minister said the admission by chief minister Parkash Singh Badal that the refusal by the NDA government to come to the rescue of the state government had forced it to hike VAT on diesel, had raised question mark on the Akali Dal's alliance with the Bhartiya Janata Party.
Manpreet asked whether the rejection of the demand for special package by the Modi government was an indication of resentment expressed by the alliance partner for the Akali Dal's decision to oppose the BJP in Haryana by joining hands with the Indian National Lok Dal or there were some other reasons. He said the fissures between the Akali Dal and the BJP were definitely deepening going by the "helplessness" expressed by the chief minister.
In a statement the former finance minister said while mobilizing resources no state government could advance the logic of "helplessness", as stated by Badal, as such decisions were always influenced by politico-economic considerations. Moreover the state governments get financial assistance from the union government under the set formula applicable to all the states, stated Manpreet. He pointed out that earlier Badal had been alleging discrimination by the UPA government but it was now the friendly NDA government which had out rightly rejected Punjab's case for special assistance which had been cited as the reason for the hike in VAT on diesel which would have all round impact on the economy.
He said the situation was back to square one and to the time when he, as the finance minister, had taken up the case of debt relief with the centre and the same had been objected to by Badal. "My initiative was not to get any credit but dictated by the interests of my state but the same was objected to for the reasons best known to Badal and even my credentials had come to be suspected. In the run up to the campaign, the ruling party leaders had been claiming that truckloads of money would come to Punjab once Narendra Modi becomes the Prime Minister. However now the Modi government has ditched Punjab and Badal owes an answer to the people", he added.
