While the district administration is attempting to play down the incident by dubbing it as "rumours", despite fact that some families staged a protest at the hospital on Saturday, CIMS authorities have confirmed deaths of 11 babies between December 1 to December 5.
Talking to TOI, Dr SK Mohanty, dean CIMS, said, "Its true that 11 babies have died but nine of them were referral cases and they were brought to the hospital in a critical condition". He said only two "in-born" babies had died due to "normal" birth related complications.
Dr Mohanty said all the nine babies referred to CIMS were born "pre-mature". He said they were admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) but "unfortunately" did not survive.
The dean denied any negligence on the part of the hospital or the doctors but confirmed that he along with the medical superintendent and head of Pediatric department had made inquiries about the deaths and were satisfied that there was no negligence. He also denied that deaths were a result of some hospital borne infections.
When contacted a senior official of the health department attempted to underplay the incident by dubbing it as "rumours". However, Bilaspur collector, Siddhart Komal Pardesi and SDM visited the hospital and also made inquiries.
Meanwhile family member of a new born baby, who died on Friday morning, staged a noisy protest at the hospital and accused the doctors of negligence. They demanded an inquiry into the death of their child.
