Lakhvi's bail 'extremely unfortunate': Rajnath Singh

NEW DELHi: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday termed the decision of a Pakistani court to grant bail to 26/11 mastermind Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi as "extremely unfortunate", coming as it did just two days after the massacre of several innocent children in Peshawar. Alleging laxity on part of the prosecuting authorities in Pakistan, Singh hoped that Islamabad would file an appeal against Lakhvi's bail order in a higher court.

"Only yesterday, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had said he would fight terrorism till the very end...I hope an appeal will be filed in a higher court, so that Lakhvi's bail is cancelled," Singh said adding that India had provided Islamabad sufficient evidence against the 26/11 accused. The minister insisted that Sharif walk the talk on ending terror by handing over "most-wanted" Lakhvi' s custody to India.

Singh highlighted the stark contrast between the 26/11 trial in India and Pakistan. While the lone surviving terrorist behind the 26/11 strikes, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was convicted and executed in 2012, the trial in Pakistan has progressed at a snail's pace, seeing multiple change of judges and frequent adjournments. "This is despite India submitting sufficient evidence to nail Lakhvi," said Singh.

When specifically asked if India felt "backstabbed" in the light Prime Minister Narendra Modi's having called Sharif after the Peshawar attacks to offer his condolences, Singh refused to link the two incidents. "Our Prime Minister did what was appropriate...the Peshawar attack not only shook Pakistan up, but the people of India were also shocked at the massacre of innocent schoolchildren," he said.

A senior home ministry officer said Pakistan needed to show more seriousness in taking the 26/11 case trial to its logical conclusion. "The evidence we have submitted to Pakistan as part of our dossiers on Mumbai attacks, is enough to prosecute both Hafiz Saeed and Lakhvi," said the officer.

The home ministry, meanwhile, is hoping that global powers will come forward to share India's disappointment with the 26/11 case trial in Pakistan. The matter may come up for discussion during US President Barack Obama's visit here next month.
