MANGALURU: The Catholic Secular Forum (CSF), the Mumbai-based NGO, called upon Union Minister of State for Personnel and in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh to exempt Christian government employees from "Good Governance Day" observances and permit them a sectional holiday.
Joseph Dias, the CSF general secretary said: This in view of the fact that media has quoted him saying that, "We are in the process of finalizing a plan for government officials for December 25" which effectively means bureaucrats, especially the senior officials will have attend office. Even if December 25 is declared "Good Governance Day", it can be observed one day later, rather than on Christmas day. This will enable Christian government servants also to be part of the celebrations.
"If Christians are exempt, then there should be no objection to the government celebrating, though for understandable reasons, Indian Christians would not be able to participate, much against their wishes. This would send a wrong signal to the world community watching the new government", said Dias.
According to Dias Christmas day is a gazetted holiday and observed internationally as the birthday of Jesus Christ and the message Modi government will send will not be a correct one. We are of the opinion that Christian government servants are not being considered and being ridden rough shod upon, just because they are a micro-minority. Surely, Christians are no different in appreciating Atal Behari Vajpayee and would desire good governance, but cannot as it makes Christmas a mockery. We feel confident, Atal Behai Vajpayee himself would not be comfortable, if government officials were obligated to work on his birthday, hurting the religious sentiments of the Christian community,'' Dias observed.
