The sarpanch belonged to the ruling National Conference and has been identified as Ghulam Mohammad Mir. He was abducted by six gunmen around 9pm on Friday.
His body was recovered with bullet injuries on the head and abdomen on Saturday morning, the police said.
This comes three days after Sopore Assembly segment went to polls in the third phase of elections in the state. The recorded turnout was 30% polling compared to 10% in 2008 assembly elections.
All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference chairman Shafiq Mir said that militants and other antidemocratic forces must read the writing on wall and shun the path of violence against the people of the state.
Shafiq said that the militants got frustrated by the high turnout during the ongoing assembly elections in the state. "Therefore they have started targeting the people who are a part of the democratic institutions of the country," he said.
"They (militants) should realize that the people of the state have rejected their ideology and have proven their full faith in the democratic system. We will not let them to kill our leaders any more. We will raise a banner of revolt against them soon if they don't stop attacks on our leaders," he added.
Another sarpanch was killed by suspected militants in Shopian district last week.
