BENGALURU: In a major breakthrough, the alleged handler of the most influential pro-Islamic State (IS) Twitter account was arrested from an apartment here in the early hours on Saturday.

Mehdi Masroor Biswas has "confessed" he was handling the pro-jihad Twitter account handle "@ShamiWitness" and he was particularly close to English-speaking ISIS terrorists.

Intelligence Bureau sources shared some details on how they handle the use of social media by terror outfits and their sympathizers.

1. All Twitter accounts, including of Mehdi, are under regular scanner of the intelligence agencies.

2.However, unless a concrete terror linkage pointing to recruitment or a real terror transaction is spotted in the handle, a crackdown is not initiated.

3. All such terror accounts are potential sources of terror information and may lead at some time to a real recruiter or terrorist.

4. In Mehdi's case, his identity became public through the media, so IB and Karnataka police had no option but to pick him up.

5. So far, he remains an ISIS sympathiser who used his Twitter handle to post and retweet updates on ISIS. His account has shown no active recruitment activity. Whether he has been personally interacting with ISIS recruiters, is still a matter of investigation.
