LONDON: Three teachers from India, one from Kolkata and two from Gujarat, have made it to the final shortlist for a $1 million Global Teacher Prize.

The shortlist that includes top 50 exceptional teachers from across the world were finalised selected from nearly 5,000 nominations from 127 countries for the Varkey Foundation instituted by a UAE-based NRI educationist.

The Indian teachers among the global top 50 include Kiran Bir Sethi, who teaches at the Riverside School in Ahmedabad; Hira Prasad, who is from Birla High School Junior Section in Kolkata, and Bijal Damani of S N Kansagra School in Rajkot.

The winner of the prize will be announced at the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai on March 16, 2015.

The Foundation said "One innovative and caring teacher who has made an inspirational impact on their students and their community will receive the reward of a lifetime. Teachers currently teaching children in a compulsory setting or between the ages 5-18 are eligible".

So what will set the winner apart from the rest?

"Recognition of a teacher's achievements in the classroom and beyond from pupils, colleagues, head-teachers or members of the wider community will be an important factor. The panel will look at how he or she prepares her students to be global citizens in a world where they will encounter people from many different religions, cultures and nationalities".

"Employing innovative and effective instructional practices and achieving demonstrable student learning outcomes in the classroom, contributing to public debates on raising the bar of the teaching profession, whether through writing articles, blogs, media participation, social media campaigns, events or conferences too will decide. Teachers who encouraging others to join the teaching profession will have an edge".

"The thousands of applications we received from all around the world is testimony to the achievements of teachers and the enormous impact they have on all of our lives. We introduced the prize this year in order to return teachers to their rightful position as the one of the most respected professions in society," said India born Sunny Varkey, founder of the UAE-based Varkey GEMS Foundation.

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey, who sits on the Global Teacher Prize Academy panel that chooses the final winner, said "When I was starting out, I was inspired by an older, more experienced actor, who told me that he thought I ought to go into acting professionally. That's the kind of mentoring and personal support that every young person needs to realise their potential. It's the kind of encouragement and guidance that good teachers give to their pupils every day".
