The issue rocked Parliament with Union home minister Rajnath Singh making a statement and clarifying that the ban is temporary until a proper regulatory framework comes in place.
This even as Union minister Nitin Gadkari spoke about the futility of any move to ban the service provider.
Delhi Police, meanwhile, registered an FIR against Uber officials and hinted at arrest of some of them.
Uber officials later in the day also appeared before Delhi Commission for Women.
Twitterati reacted strongly through the day as developments unfolded. Many feel that the Government's decision to ban the service is not justified at all. Rather there are other things that need more focus and changes, they tweeted.
However, at the same time many of the tweeterati have come out in support of this decision.
Netizens also came out with suggetions for the government.
In another development, Thailand has also ordered US online taxi booking company Uber to cease operations, on the same day taxi apps were banned in Delhi.
