19 more suspected cases of swine flu in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR: The increase in awareness about swine flu seems to have led to a spurt in the number of people approaching hospitals, both private and government, for treatment, as 19 more samples were sent to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Delhi, for tests on Sunday.

While so far 17 positive cases of swine flu have been detected in the state and one person has died due to the virus, 119 samples have been sent till date to NCDC for tests. Confirming this, Deputy Director state's Integrated Disease Surveillance Project (IDSP), Dr SMM Murthy, said the samples sent to NCDC include those of the relatives and people who came in contact with the suspected swine flu patients.

Attributing the sudden increase in the number of suspected swine flu cases to the increased levels of awareness about the disease, doctors at government hospital said, "it's good that people are approaching us for treatment whenever they are in doubts". Stating that all cases of viral fevers are not swine flu, the doctors said there was not need for the people to panic as the disease, if detected well in time, is totally treatable like any other flu.

Health department has already sounded an alert and issued an advisory to all the government hospitals and medical college to take preventive prevent the spread of the disease and make proper arrangements for treatment of patients. Isolation wards have been established at Dr BR Ambedkar Hospital and Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) Bilaspur besides arrangements have been made for treatment at district hospitals.

Abundant stocks of Tamiflu tablets is also being maintained in all the hospitals, he added.
