HOWRAH: It was a unique sight indeed. Thirty monks of Ramakrishna Mission's headquarters at Belur Math sailing in a boat to the Ramakrishnapur Ghat in Howrah and then walking to a house in Ramakrishnapur Lane singing all the way. This happened on Tuesday on the occasion of Maghi Purnima. It was on this occasion in 1898 that Swami Vivekananda had sailed to this ghat in Howrah from Belur Math and walked to the Ghosh residence at Ramakrishnapur Lane. Before leaving, Swamiji left his turban behind at the house and it remains there still, revered by all. "Nabagopal Ghosh was a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahansa.

In 1898, he was a senior executive at the Henderson Company in Kolkata and earned Rs 300 per month. After Ramakrishna passed away, Ghosh decided to build a temple for him at his residence in Howrah. Before his death, Ramakrishna had said that he would settle down anywhere his favourite Naren (Swami Vivekananda) chose to carry him. It was with this in mind that Ghosh requested Vivekananda to inaugurate the temple," a member of the Ghosh family said. Maghi Purnima in 1898 was on February 5 and Vivekananda had just returned from Chicago after his historic speech.

He along with fellow monks sailed from Belur on that day and got off at Ramakrishnapur Ghat. The group then walked to the Ghosh residence, singing songs penned by Girish Ghosh. It is said that Swami Vivekananda was mesmerised on seeing the statue of Ramakrishna in the temple at Ghosh's house. He immediately uttered words that is the Ramakrishna Mission's 'Pranam Mantra' till date. Swami Vivekananda then offered prayers at the temple and spent tim with the Ghosh family. He also gifted Ghosh's wife Nistarini Devi his turban, played the family piano and sang along. Both piano and turban have been preserved till now. On Tuesday, the monks offered prayers to the turban and at the temple. They also sang songs in the room where the piano is kept.

"There is a fact that is only known to a few people outside the family. On that day, Swami Vivekananda requested Nistarini Devi to cook him some biriyani. Nistarini Devi did so and everybody had their fill," said Ghosh's grand-daughter-in-law Chaitali Ghosh. His grandson Tapas Ghosh said that they look out for this day every year. The monks also visit the house on the third Sunday of every and perform songs. EOM Sent from BlackBerry® on Airtel
