Amit Shah pulls up Giriraj Singh for 'white'skin' remark targeting Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI BJP chief Amit Shah on Wednesday spoke to Union minister Giriraj Singh on the phone in connection with his sexist remark on Sonia Gandhi and told him to refrain from making such statements.

Giriraj Sing courted fresh controversy with his sexist remarks aimed at the Congress president wondering if her party would have accepted Sonia Gandhi's leadership if she was not white-skinned, a statement condemned by the Congress which asked the Prime Minister to dismiss him and apologize to the nation.

Giriraj's comments during a meeting in Bihar's Hajipur district on Tuesday went viral today. In the video he is seen saying, "If Rajiv Gandhi would have married a Nigerian lady, and she wasn't a white-skinned girl, would Congress party have accepted her leadership?"

The minister also took a swipe at Rahul Gandhi's absence from Parliament and compared him with the missing Malaysian Airlines flight.

"Imagine a situation, if Congress was in power instead of us and had Rahul been the Prime Minister, and if for some reason, the PM had disappeared for more than 47 days.

"Absence of Congress vice-president is similar to that of the missing Malaysian airliner that still has not been located. The same way the Congress leader was not present in the budget session. No one in Congress is ready to speak. This is unfortunate for the Congress and a joke for the country," he said.

Just a day ahead of the BJP's national executive meet, the remark triggered a volley of reactions from across the political spectrum as well as the Nigerian envoy in Delhi.

The Congress reacted with anger. "The comments reflect the lack of moral fibre in the BJP. It appears that the continuous quest to appease Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made him lose his balance," Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress's spokesperson said.

Reacting to the remarks, Congress party's senior leader Digvijaya Singh demanded the minister's resignation.

Various women leaders also attacked Giriraj Singh, who is Union minister of state for micro, small and medium enterprises, saying it reflected his racial mindset and attitude towards women.

Other party leaders also condemned his remark. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said, "The remark made by a minister on Sonia Gandhi is highly condemnable. This reflects people's thinking. Such remarks have not been made for the first time.

"Talk which is considered to be wrong and condemnable in society, when such things are said... the matter does not remain confined to the person who has said it, it is a reflection on the entire party and government as to what their thought process is."

RJD supremo Lalu Prasad said that Singh should be "treated in the same way" as JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav when he had made objectionable remarks over the complexion of women.

"This man (Singh) should be treated the same way as JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav was when he made objectionable remarks on the skin colour of women. It (such comments) can only be made by Singh and those who are members of RSS," Prasad said."

Baffled at the minister's choice of words, Acting Nigerian High Commissioner to India OB Okongor remarked, "The minister should have been much more circumspect..."

"We have good bilateral relations with India...but the union minister's remarks are uncalled for, unacceptable," he added.

In 2014, after the BJP won the Lok Sabha elections, Giriraj Singh had asked all those opposing Prime Minister Narendra Modi to move to Pakistan.

When asked about his controversial comments, Singh, who was in Delhi today, initially refused to speak to the media. As his remarks snowballed into a major controversy, the BJP leader said if his comments have hurt Gandhi, he regretted them.

"If Soniaji and Rahulji have been hurt by my remarks, I express my regret," he said even as he maintained that his remarks were "off the record" and suggested that media was blowing it out of proportion.
