BENGALURU: Congress government in Karnataka seems to have penchant for introducing bills and withdrawing them later when introducers realize that it is either against peoples sentiments or party interests . On Tuesday revenue minister V Srinivasa Prasad introduced a bill seeking amendment to Land reforms act increasing non-agricultural income ceiling for buying lands in the state from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. But government suddenly retreated and withdrew the bill . This retreat is not without a reason. Inside sources in Congress disclosed to Times Of India that Congress leaders felt that bill was in consonance with the land acquisition bill brought by NDA government against which Congress is waging a war . A source said chief minister frankly told the revenue minister V Srinivasa Prasad and law minister T B Jayachandra to have a relook at the bill as party president Sonia Gandhi may not like a venture of this nature at this juncture when she is organizing protests and rallies against NDA land acquisition ordinance saying that it is anti-farmer. But two ministers never bothered to hear the chief minister's words of wisdom in the cabinet meeting, source added .

Meanwhile party legislators and leaders are upset over state government's move to bring this legislation which according to them is going to help realtors, corrupt officials who have amassed wealth and rich people . Even Congress chief whip in the assembly Ashok M Pattan expressed his ire against leaders who gave such an anti-farmer idea . " Bill was neither discussed in the CLP nor had any approval from the high command" he said claiming that this drama of introducing bills and withdrawing them hastily has left dented the party and government's image .

Opposing the bill ,former minister Tanvir Sait said on the one hand government gives interest free loans to the tune of Rs 3 lakh to farmers to encourage them to increase food grain production and on the other hand it amends the act to encourage realtors , corrupt politicians and bureaucrats to buy the land and leave them barren. " Is there any logic in the bill" he asked and said he does not know why state government has failed to understand Congress high command's stand on land acquisitions. Another Congress leader C S Nadagowda also said that matter was not discussed in CLP and said bill will open Pandora's box on the agriculture and farmers front.Arakalgud Congress legislator A Manju criticized the bill and said he does not understand what has happened to this government which introduces a bill and withdraws.

However, law minister T B Jayachandra confirming withdrawing of the bill said government wants to make bill more farmers friendly . "It is not true that party high command has suggested government to not introduce such a bill when national party is fighting such a draconian law brought by NDA government" he said and added government wants to incorporate some clauses intended to protect farmers and makes the law more foolproof.
