In his opening speech at the party's national executive meeting that began on Friday morning, Shah seemed to have spelt out his party's main campaign-line for the Bihar assembly polls, by saying that the "jungle raj" that had prevailed during the RJD rule in the state under Lalu Prasad and his wife Rabri Devi, has returned for a second phase, under CM Nitish Kumar.
Referring to the break-up of the alliance between Nitish Kumar's JD(U) and BJP in Bihar in July 2013, after the coalition government had had a successful run for one and half terms, by dislodging the RJD regime, Shah on Friday said, "people had chosen the BJP-JD(U) alliance, but the JD(U) ditched the people's mandate by dumping BJP and jungle returned to the state," according to Union environment minister Prakash Javdekar, who briefed the media.
Shah's obvious attempt was to paint Nitish Kumar with the same brush as Lalu Prasad, as the two leaders have emerged as new allies in the state and together they could be a formidable rival for BJP. Hence the "Jungle Raj" tag has been extended to Nitish Kumar now by Shah.
By tagging Nitish Kumar with Lalu Prasad, Shah has also ruled out the possibility of an alliance between the erstwhile partners JD(U) and BJP, as speculation on these lines had been doing the rounds for a while.
The Bihar elections will be the first challenge for Shah, after BJP's crushing defeat in Delhi.
